Genealogies of Jesus

Kept as public records — see http://biblehub.com /topical /g/genealogy.htm

Zerubbabel (in 453BC) took a census of the Jews and settled the returning exiles from Babylon to Israel according to their genealogies (1 Chronicles 3:19-24   1 Chronicles 9:1   Ezra 2:1-64   Nehemiah 7:5-66   Nehemiah 11:1-36   Nehemiah 12:1-26). With the rigid exclusion of all foreign intermixtures by the leaders of the restoration (Ezra 10:18-44   Nehemiah 10:30   Nehemiah 13:23-31), the genealogical interest naturally deepened until it reached its climax, at the time of Christ, followed by the destruction of Jerusalem (with so many literary records). Josephus, in the opening of his Life, states that his own pedigree was registered in the public records. Many families in Christ's time clearly possessed such lists (Luke 1:5, etc.). The affirmed, reiterated and unquestioned Davidic ancestry of Christ in the New Testament with his explicit genealogies (Matthew 1:1-17   Luke 3:23-38), Paul's statement of his own ancestry, Barnabas' Levitical ancestry, are cases in point. Descendants of David are found as late as the Roman period. There is a tradition that Herod 1 destroyed the genealogical lists at Jerusalem to strengthen his own seat, but more probably they persisted until the destruction of Jerusalem.

Below are the 77 generations of Jesus back to Adam and God. "Seven" in Hebrew is the word to "swear", make an oath, to fix a boundary. The counting of those generations ended in him. And thus in 1 Corinthians 15:45-47 Jesus is named as the "last Adam" on earth and the "second Man" from Heaven. As he then breathed on the disciples to welcome the Holy Spirit, so, until the day he returns, those words enable us to receive faith, to welcome the Holy Spirit, to become part of His Family, as well.
Hallelujah.

  22. Shealtiel (or Salathiel) is recorded in 1 Chronicles 3:17 as the son of Jeconiah. Shealtiel is thought to have been the closest relative of Jeconiah and his royal heir after the Lord declared Jeconiah, a "broken pot" would die childless ("bare"). See Jeremiah 22:30 (and Genesis 15:2)

  45. Obed his birth to a young mother, Ruth — and definitely an aged father, Boaz, possibly around 1245 BC — was much celebrated.
  46. Boaz son of Rahab, born possibly some time around 1405 BC, and marries Ruth as an aged man a bit like Abraham who married Keturah as an aged man and had 6 more children to her. Genesis 25:1-2
  47. Salmon marries Rahab, believed to be the harlot, probably a young harlot, who had rescued the spies sent by Joshua to Jericho in 1465 BC
  48. Nahshon
  49. Amminadab

The early Codex Sinaiticus script used in the NLT and the ESV and some other modern translations includes an additional name Admin between Aram (which it renames as Arni) and Amminadab. If it's not a typo, if Admin was a real character, he still makes Jesus the 77th generation but this list needs to start with Adam (instead of God) as generation 1. That's fine, Jesus as we know is both son of man and son of God.

  50. Aram
  51. Hezron
Hezron was born around 1721 BC and went into Egypt (Jacob's great-grandson).
  52. Pharez
Pharez was born around 1734 BC (Jacob's grandson).

  62. Eber 2295BC - 1831BC
  63. Salah 2325BC - 1892BC
  64. Cainan
Cainan is not mentioned in Genesis, although he must have been part of the public records. According to the Book of Jubilees, he revived the condemned arts of astrology and was presumably cast out. His son Salah was raised by his grandfather Arphaxad who was only 35 at the time of Salah's birth. See Ruth 4:17, where Obed is called the son of Naomi though he was really her grandson, her sons having previously died.

  10. Salmon
  11. Boaz of Rahab — Boaz marries Ruth, a Moabitess, tenth generation from Abraham and his brother-in-law/nephew Lot who had fathered Moab unknowingly through his daughter. Note the prohibition in Deuteronomy 23:2-3

  19. Jehoshaphat
  20. Jehoram, whom Jehoshaphat causes to marry Athaliah, daughter of Ahab and Jezebel — his son Ahaziah, grandson Joash and great-grandson Amaziah apparently have ungodly ends, distant from God, and are neither mentioned nor counted in this genealogy
  21. Uzziah
  22. Jotham
  23. Ahaz
  24. Hezekiah
  25. Manasseh
  26. Amon
  27. Josiah
  28. Jehoiachin — strictly speaking he was Josiah's grandson, but Josiah's son Jehoiakim has no mention — it was the time Israel was captured and taken to the kingdom of Babylon — Jehoiakim's younger brother Jehoahaz who took the throne in Israel died in captivity in Egypt — Jehoiakim died in Jerusalem — then Jehoiakim's son Jehoiachin and his brothers are taken prisoners into Babylon

And after the Jews were brought to Babylon we next see

Jehoiachin, King of Israel (in captivity but also renewed, born again) — the somewhat invisible nation

  29. Jehoiachin — with renewal coming at the end of the 37th year of his captivity — see 2 Kings 25:27-30
  30. Shealtiel, his heir (see note above)
  31. Zerubbabel, Shealtiel's nephew
  32. Abiud

So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations
